The 26th Amendment
The United States constitution is a living document. It is the law of the United States. The amendments adapt the Constitution. The 26th amendment changed the voting age to 18. In 1970, a combination of federal statue and the 26th amendment lowered the voting age to 18. The first indication of a change in attitude came during World War 2 because people were motivated by the belief that a person old enough to fight should be able to vote. In 1970 the United States was fighting the Vietnam War. If 18 year olds were fighting in Vietnam they should be able to vote. The 26th amendment is still relative today because 18 year olds can still vote today in the United States.

23rd Amendment
The US Constitution is the law of the United States. The Amendments change laws to be more relevant to the people. The 23rd Amendment allows Washington D.C to get 3 electoral votes. The history of Washington D.C was never supposed to be where people lived it was only supposed to be for government purposes. But people started living within its borders. By 1900 there were a quarter of a million people. They felt that since they had to pay income tax and serve in the military they should have a say in voting for their president. They now can vote in presidential electoral votes. The 23rd amendment is still relevant because over 600,000 people have the right to vote in Washington D.C today.

The 17th Amendment
The United States Constitution is the law of the United States. The Amendments change the laws of the Constitution. The 17th
Amendment changes how we vote for senators to a more consistent way for all states to have a direct election of senators. From 1789 to May 1912 the selection of senators was not by the people, but by the state legislature. The selection system was being corrupted by bribery. This was not good to pick the senators. The 17th Amendment allows senators be chosen by the people. This Amendment is still relevant because people do need to get a say in their government, this is democratic country and they should.

The 16th Amendment
The United States Constitution is a law in the United States, the Amendments change the Constitution. The 16th Amendment is the Income Tax Amendment, which means the amount of money you pay on what you make. The history of the income tax in American dates is back to the War of 1812. The governments need the money to pay for the War of 1812. The War of 1812 ended the income tax was dropped. Then, the government brought it up again with the Civil War in 1862. In 1909, President William Howard Taft suggested that a Constitutional Amendment was a good idea. The Congress spent over a 100 years to come up with a fair law of income tax it was a progressive tax. Progressive tax is the tax is in which you will make more money. We still need more tax about how much people pay. The Income Tax Amendment is still relevant today because the taxes are used to pay for government projects.

1st The FREEDOM OF SPEECH, PRESS, RELIGION, ASSEMBLY AND PETITION
On December 15th 1791 the first 10 Amendments were ratified. Which meant you can say or write just about anything you want. You can follow any religion you choose. And if you have any complaints about the government, go ahead and speak up! The government can’t stop you.
The right to assemble is necessary to free speech. It allows people to get together to discuss ideas or to make their complaints known. This is the right to protest.
The BILL OF RIGHTS was part of the Constitution for several states of the day, placed there to ensure that certain rights were recognized by the government.
The lack of a bill of rights was one of the main arguments that anti-federalists used to try to convince the public to reject the Constitution.
We need the first Amendment because without it we wouldn’t have our freedom.

The 27th Amendment
The U.S. Constitution is the law in the United States. The amendments change the laws so that the law is more relevant to the people. The 27th Amendment banned midterm congressional pay raises. The Amendment was originally proposed in the original bill of rights by James Madison in Michigan on September 25, 1789, but it was not pass. On May 7, 1992 it became an amendment and it did not allow congress to give themselves a pay raise. This amendment is relevant to today because it prevents congress from getting too much money.

13th Amendment
Slavery was in use in America in the 18th and 19th centuries. The south relied on slavery because they used the slaves to grow their crops. During the time of slavery, Lincoln was president and he did not believe in slavery. Many of the southern states did not agree with Lincoln so they did not want to be part of America, which led to the civil war. Congress approved the 13th Amendment on December 6, 1865. The 13th Amendment is still relevant to today because without it we wouldn’t have Barack Obama as president.

The 22nd Amendment
The United States Constitution is the law of America; however the Amendments allow changes to the Constitution. The 22nd Amendment is the Amendment that limits how long a President can serve in office to 2 terms. President Gorge Washington was elected in the year 1789. He served only 2 terms. This was not a law but it was still how it happened for 150 years. But then Franklin Delano Roosevelt (FDR) was elected in 1936. However, in 1940 Hitler was in power and the country was getting over The Great Depression. Since the country didn’t want to elect a new leader, Roosevelt was elected to third term in 1940. In 1944 the country was in the middle of World War II and we didn’t want to change leaders a second time. Roosevelt ran for a 4th term and won. After this Congress decided that a limit of 2 terms should be the law. The 22nd Amendment is important today because it prevents the President from the having too much power.

The 20th Amendment
The United States Constitution is the law of America; however the Amendments allow updates to the Constitution. The 20th Amendment is about the President and the Vice President taking office on January 20th. At first, a new President was elected in November, but did not take office until March. The reason it took so long was because it was difficult to communicate news quickly, and travel was difficult as well. The 20th Amendment tries to clear up this problem by shortening the period between when an official is elected and when they are sworn in, this is called the Lame Duck period. Now the Congress is sworn in on January 3rd following a November election and the President is sworn in on January 20th after the November election. The 20th Amendment was ratified by the states on January 23rd, 1933. Before the 20th .0Amendment the Lame Duck period was 5 months, now it is 3 months. The 20th Amendment is still relevant today because it is important for leadership changes to happen quickly.

14th and 15th Amendments
The United States Constitution is the law of America; however the amendments allow updates to the Constitution. The 14th Amendment gives African Americans citizenship. Passing the 14th Amendment was a major victory for the north because it supported the 13th Amendment. The 13th Amendment was passed to stop slavery in the United States. Giving African Americans citizenship in the 14th Amendments allowed them the freedoms and rights of the constitution, but they could not vote. The 15th Amendment gives African Americans the right to vote. There were Radical Republicans who wrote black codes, these codes made it difficult for the ex – slaves to vote in the south. This limited African Americans rights. The 14th and 15th Amendments are still relevant because everyone in the United States has the right to vote, regardless of color.

The 12th Amendment
The United States Constitution is the law of America; however the Amendments allow updates to the Constitution. The 12th Amendment is about the change to the Electoral College. It was first given to Congress on December 9th, 1803. It was ratified on June 15th, 1804. The reason for this Amendment is because the government no longer wanted a popular vote to elect the president. They made it so the votes are taken by states, which means that whichever candidate wins a state, that candidate gets all the state’s electoral votes. The electoral vote is not based on population size. It’s based on each state getting as many electoral votes as they have members in the House of Representatives and the senate. Out of 538, one must have 270 votes to become president.
With this evidence the 12th Amendment is still relevant today.

The 2nd Amendment
The United States Constitution is the law of America; however the Amendments allow updates to the Constitution. The Second Amendment is the right to bear arms. The Second Amendment was passed on December 15, 1791. The second amendment says that the government is able to own weapons and citizens can also own weapons. In order for people to have a gun they need a permit. The second amendment should be changed so people do not need a permit to own a gun. IF people did not need a permit then more people would be able to protect themselves.

The 19th Amendment
The United States Constitution is the law of America; however Amendments allow updates to the Constitution. The 19th Amendment is the change to the Constitution that gives women the right to vote. The 19th Amendment was introduced in 1878 and was something people argued over for forty years. During this time women were campaigning for their rights. During World War I women began to help out with the war, which convinced President Woodrow Wilson to pass the 19th Amendment on August 18, 1920.

15th Amendment
The United States Constitution is the law of America; the Amendments allow changes to the Constitution. African Americans in the United States should be able to have the right to vote.
They should have that right regardless of their skin color or back ground of religion or culture or jobs or income. The 15th amendment is the “Right to Vote” for blacks, we should not discriminates them. Although the 15th amendment was proposed on Feb. 26, 1869 and ratified on Feb 3, 1870, people still found ways to stop blacks from voting like using reading tests, poll tax, etc. This Amendment is still relevant today, it is part of our rights, all of the people can vote today.

The 13th Amendment
The United States Constitution is the law of America, however the Amendments allow changes to the constitution. The 13th Amendment is the abolishment of slavery. Slavery was taking place in America in the 18th and 19th centuries. Southern states relied on slavery. People in the South used the slaves to work on all the crops. Slaves worked for free that’s why white people used slaves. Slaves had no rights to learn how to read or to be armed. Lincoln didn’t believe in slavery so many states withdrew from the Union and joined the Confederate States. Because of this, the Civil War began and after that, on December 6, 1865, Congress passed the amendment to end slavery. The 13th Amendment is still important because today we would have never had Barack Obama as president.
